I planned a solo getaway to a remote cabin in North Carolina after years of burnout. Before I left, my stepsister begged me to take her 10-year-old daughter, Clara, but I refused because I needed time alone.
When I arrived, Clara was already there with an elderly woman suffering a severe asthma attack. Clara revealed she had run away from an abusive home and was trying to get help.
With no cell service, we used an emergency flare to alert a nearby volunteer medical clinic, which rescued the woman. I spent the rest of my vacation helping at the clinic while Clara found safety and Eleanor finally agreed to seek help.
Lesson: Sometimes the plans you lose lead to the purpose you never expected.
