Maya had always refused to cut her waist-length hair. So when she came home with it chopped above her shoulders, I feared someone had hurt her.
Then she showed us a note from Liam, a classmate who had lost his hair during chemotherapy and was being bullied. Maya had secretly cut her own hair to donate it for his wig.
We were upset she had used scissors at school, but deeply proud of her kindness. Her school later organized a hair donation drive for children with cancer.
I thought someone had taken something precious from my daughter. Instead, she had given it away to help someone else.
