He Broke Into My Car for Food—What I Did Next Changed His Life
It was nearly midnight when I heard a strange sound outside. Looking through the window, I saw a man leaning into my car. I was terrified and ready to call the police—until I realized what he had taken.
It was my daughter’s pink lunch box.
Inside was only half a peanut butter sandwich and a bottle of water.
“I was just hungry,” he said, trembling. “I’m sorry.”
Instead of calling the police, I invited him inside for a hot meal. Over soup and grilled cheese, he told me how losing his job and marriage had left him homeless and sleeping behind a shopping center.
I helped him find a caseworker, drove him to job interviews, and eventually watched him get a job, a room, and then an apartment.
Months later, we still meet for coffee.
One day, he looked at me and said, “That night, when you fed me instead of calling the cops, was the night I decided I was worth saving.”
Sometimes, one small act of kindness can completely change a person’s life.
