My husband and I have been married for six years. Before me, he spent seven years with his ex, Jess, who died from cancer shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Kate.
Kate, now six, was raised by her maternal grandmother while my husband stayed involved through visits, birthdays, and financial support. I always understood that Kate was not our responsibility.
Now her grandmother is seriously ill, and my husband wants us to permanently adopt Kate. After years of infertility, he says this is “our chance” to finally have a child. But I barely know Kate, and I worry that his decision is driven by grief, guilt, and unfinished feelings about Jess rather than a shared decision about our future.
When I said I wasn’t ready, my mother-in-law began pressuring me with messages like, “What kind of mother turns away a child who needs her?” and warned that I would regret refusing.
I feel trapped. Saying yes means becoming a full-time mother under circumstances I never chose. Saying no could destroy my marriage and make me the villain in his family’s eyes.
Am I being selfish for hesitating, or is my husband’s family crossing a line by pressuring me into adoption?
