When my husband, Derek, got a job across the country, he expected me to leave everything behind. But my aging parents needed me, so I refused.
Derek accused me of holding him back and moved without me. Soon, he had a new apartment, a new city, and eventually, a new girlfriend.
Nearly a year later, Derek showed up at my door with a suitcase.
“You always knew I’d come back,” he said.
Then he noticed his former boss sitting in my living room—and went pale.
Months earlier, his boss had contacted me after finding my name as Derek’s emergency reference. That’s when I learned Derek had been fired for missing work and blaming others. His new relationship had also ended.
Now he was back, expecting me to rescue him.
I handed him his suitcase.
“You came back,” I said. “That doesn’t mean I was waiting.”
Then I closed the door.
