I Bought a Bag of Apples for a Mother with Two

I’m 43, working mornings at a small grocery store to keep life steady for my family. Money’s tight, and we’re doing our best to support our daughter’s dreams.
One Saturday, a woman with two kids couldn’t afford all her groceries and asked me to remove the apples and cereal. Something in me broke, and I quietly paid the ten dollars. She thanked me and left.
A few days later, a police officer came for me—I panicked—only to find he was the woman’s husband, just home from nearly a year undercover. He and his family wanted to thank me. The kids even made a drawing of me with a superhero cape.
A week later, I was promoted. The officer had written to corporate about my kindness.
All from a small moment. And I’d do it again without thinking.
