I Met My Boyfriend’s Parents — They Tried to Make Me Pay for Everyone as a ‘Test

I’m Ella, 29, and I need honest advice about a relationship red flag. I’ve been dating my boyfriend for two years, and when he invited me to meet his parents, I thought it meant we were heading toward engagement.

At dinner, before I even sat down, he joked that I should’ve brought my wallet. It wasn’t a joke. His parents said it was a “family tradition” — the girlfriend pays for everyone to prove she’s not using their son. My boyfriend didn’t even offer to help. It was a “test.”

I paid for my own meal and left.

Now he says I “failed” and calls me dramatic. His parents agree.

Is this a toxic family dynamic and financial red flag, or am I overreacting? Would you walk away from a relationship like this? I need outside perspective.
