I Recently Moved In With My Son And DIL: What I Overheard One Night Changed Everything

I moved in with my son and daughter-in-law to help with the twins, but she was distant and critical. One night, I overheard her say, “She’s not my mother. I didn’t ask her to come.” My heart broke. I had given up everything to help them, yet I felt like a burden.
I decided to move out quietly. Then, a woman at the park mentioned how the twins loved my “dragon voice” stories. It reminded me I was doing something right. Later, I overheard my DIL crying to my son, saying she felt like a failure and that the kids loved me more. For the first time, I saw her pain, not her coldness.
We talked the next day and apologized to each other. I still moved out, but our relationship slowly healed. When my son was injured in a car accident, I stepped in again — this time, she welcomed me.
Later, she said, “I don’t want you to leave again. Not because we need you, but because we want you.”
They built me a small in-law suite, and peace finally found us. I learned that distance and kindness can turn misunderstanding into love.
