I Spent All Day Cooking, But She Asked For Pizza
I spent all day cooking my girlfriend’s favorite meal before work — roasted garlic chicken, risotto, lava cakes. When she called asking for pizza, I said, “But I cooked for you.” She laughed, “I already threw it away.” That’s when I found out she’d been cheating.
After my shift, I came home to untouched plates beside a Domino’s box. I packed the food away quietly — couldn’t bring myself to toss it too. Then I left.
I drove back to my hometown, to my mom’s warm kitchen and old 70s music. There, I ran into an old friend who owned a café — and a girl named Nina who made candles. She gave me one that smelled like cedar and clove. “Good for heartbreak,” she said.
Weeks turned to months. I started cooking again, smiling again. With their help, I opened a small restaurant called The Hearth. On opening day, I served the same meal my ex threw away — this time to people who savored every bite.
A year later, my ex wrote, saying she was proud of me. I didn’t reply. I’d already found something better — peace, purpose, and someone who saw my worth.
So if someone ever tosses your love aside, remember — you’re not what was thrown away. You’re what stays warm.
