My in-laws hosted a fancy downtown dinner to celebrate our son’s high school graduation. Everything felt perfect — until the $1,700 bill arrived. My father-in-law said he’d cover it, then told me to pay the 18% tip because I “brought guests” — meaning my own parents.
The table went silent. I refused, saying I wouldn’t pay a tip for being a son-in-law, and left with my parents.
That night, my wife said I embarrassed her over “a few hundred dollars.” By the time I got home, she was gone with our son.
Now I’m asking: should I have paid to keep the peace — or was standing up for my parents the right move?
