When my brother died in a tragic accident, his will left his money to me, not his daughter. I still made my niece a priority, supporting her emotionally and financially throughout her childhood.
Years later, at 19 and preparing for college, she suddenly called and demanded, “Send me Dad’s money. I need it for college.”
I explained that the inheritance legally belonged to me and that I planned to use the money for my own son’s education. She immediately hung up.
Soon after, she told relatives that I was stealing her father’s money and refusing to support her future. Family members began calling me selfish and heartless, insisting I should give her the inheritance because it was “her dad’s money.”
But my brother specifically left it to me. I never promised to fund my niece’s college education, and I never agreed to be her financial safety net.
What hurts most isn’t the money—it’s how she treated me. If she had asked for help respectfully, things might have been different.
