I found an old VHS tape with a note!

While helping my dad collect my hospitalized mom’s belongings, I opened her jewelry safe and found a shocking note: “DON’T SHOW LUCY.” I was Lucy.

Beneath it was an old VHS tape labeled, “Watch this when you’re ready.” Curious and nervous, I played it—and saw my late grandfather on screen.

“If you’re watching this, you’re ready for the truth,” he said. He told me to dig beneath the old oak tree by the creek.

I followed his instructions and uncovered a rusty metal box containing old letters and a sapphire ring. The letters revealed that my grandfather had once deeply loved a woman named Eleanor before marrying my grandmother.

When I showed my grandmother what I found, she simply said, “So, you found it.” She explained that she knew about Eleanor and understood that love could be complicated. My grandfather had chosen to build a life with her, and they had shared decades of love and family.

In the end, I returned the box to the oak tree but kept the ring—not as a secret, but as a reminder that some love stories are meant to be remembered, not rewritten.
