After 17 years of marriage, I never expected my divorced neighbor Vanessa to calmly tell me, “I’m going to take your husband.”
At first, I welcomed her, brought her pie, and helped her settle in. But soon, she constantly found excuses to call my husband, Irvin, asking for help with everything from shelves to smoke detectors.
Then she told me, “Men get bored. Prepare for divorce.”
Irvin refused her advances, but Vanessa kept flirting and even invited him to a neighborhood barbecue without me.
I told him to go—then arrived 30 minutes later with a gift box filled with tools, batteries, lightbulbs, and a list of local handymen.
“Now you don’t need my husband anymore.”
Vanessa retaliated by reporting my home bakery for a permit issue and sharing cropped messages to make Irvin look guilty.
Instead of hiding our mistake, we admitted the permit problem and brought the full messages to the HOA meeting. They showed Irvin had repeatedly rejected Vanessa.
Once the truth came out, her plan to break up our marriage fell apart.
