I’ll never forget the smell of rain and wet pavement that night. Heading home after work, I heard a woman say, “Please, stop.”
Under a dim streetlight, a sharply dressed man stood too close to her. She looked calm, but her eyes were clearly searching for help.
Without thinking, I stepped between them.
When he told me to mind my own business, I said, “I am. She’s my sister.”
The woman quickly agreed. “Yes,” she said, visibly relieved. The man hesitated, then walked away.
She thanked me, and after exchanging names, we went our separate ways. I thought that was the end of it.
Months later, I walked into an important job interview—and froze.
The same man was sitting at the table.
He recognized me immediately and smiled.
“Well,” he said, “this should be interesting.”
That’s when I realized he hadn’t forgotten me either.
