When my 22-year-old son’s girlfriend moved into our home, I asked him to have her help with expenses.
He quietly replied, “Mom… she has nowhere else to go.”
That night, she revealed she had lost her mother, had no family to turn to, and had been sleeping on friends’ couches and in her car.
Everything changed. We welcomed her as family instead of a guest.
She found a full-time hospital job, enrolled in nursing school, and later offered to pay rent. Instead, we gave her a $15,000 gift my late husband had left to help someone in need.
She became a nurse, married my son, and went on to help others rebuild their lives.
