I smiled and applauded before walking to the microphone. Instead of pointing out that my stepson hadn’t thanked me, I praised his hard work and reminded everyone that every child is shaped by the quiet love of many people.
When I finished, he ran over with tears in his eyes. “I should have thanked you. I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I smiled and said he owed me nothing. The audience applauded, reminded that true love never asks for recognition.
