The bathroom scale in my childhood home was a daily reminder of shame. Every morning, my parents judged my weight, and I grew up believing I had to apologize for taking up space.
As a plus-size woman, I learned to stay quiet, wear oversized clothes, avoid attention, and make myself as small as possible—for everyone else’s comfort.
I thought that was the only way to belong.
Then one flight to Denver changed everything. Standing up for the airplane seat I paid for taught me a life-changing lesson: I deserve to take up space, just like everyone else.
