For four years, my mother-in-law used the house key my husband gave her to enter our home without permission. She opened our mail, rearranged our belongings, and even went through my private paperwork.
I begged my husband to take the key back, but he always defended her with, “She’s family.”
Then I caught her going through my dresser.
Instead of getting angry, I invited her back and told her to go through the entire house—while my husband secretly watched.
For the first time, he saw exactly what she was doing.
He confronted her and demanded the key.
She finally handed it over, and he changed the locks.
Weeks later, she knocked before entering and asked, “May I come in?”
After four years, she finally understood that being family doesn’t mean having unlimited access to someone else’s home.
